BMW 5 Series Review: Elegant, Powerful, and Efficient

The BMW 5 Series is everything a luxury sedan of this segment is meant to be – elegant, powerful, and efficient. The latest generation of BMW’s hugely successful four-door sedan comes with a striking design that is a refreshing change from the other cars in this segment. BMW has also worked on tuning the engine line-up of the new 5 Series in such a way that it delivers improved performance and improved fuel efficiency at the same time. Powertrain

BMW provides prospective buyers of its 5 Series a wide selection of engine and transmission options to choose from. The base trim level comes with a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder, BMW TwinPower motor that produces a power output of 248 hp. This version can do 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds and hit a top speed of 130 mph. The hybrid version of the car, the BMW 530e, comes with the same engine which has been detuned to 180 hp. However, it is teamed with a 111 hp electric motor that is powered by a lithium ion battery for improved fuel efficiency.

Both aforementioned trim levels can be specified with RWD or AWD, depending on the customer’s preference.

Next up is the BMW 540i, which has a 3.0 liter V6 gasoline engine that is boosted by two turbochargers to 335 hp. The drive is channelled to the wheels via an 8 speed automatic gearbox, enabling this car can dispatch the 0-60 mph dash in 4.9 seconds. The 540i can be ordered with all wheel drive as well. The range-topping trim level of the 5 Series line-up is the M550i, which has a 4.4 liter V8 powering it. This engine belts out 456 hp and can rocket the car from rest to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Included in the list of features are powered leather seats with memory, a 12 speaker sound system, an 8.8 inch instrument console, the latest iDrive system with touch input and a 10.2 inch touchscreen, automatic climate control with micro filter ventilation, ambient interior lighting, a sunroof, a smart key through which you can control several parameters, and much more.

Safety

Safety has been given a very high priority in the new 5 Series, and the car comes with multiple airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, rain sensing wipers, adaptive brake lights, LATCH child safety systems, a rear view camera, automatic headlights, dynamic cruise control, BMW remote services with an SOS button, an impact sensor, brake drying function, traction control and dynamic stability control, ABS, and cornering brake control.

The company has even gone on to equip the 5 Series with a system through which the driver is notified of the brake pad wear status. All in all, the new BMW 5 Series is a very safe place to be in.
